How to Care for Your Mattress: Tips to Make It Last Longer

A quality mattress is one of the most important investments you will make for your home and your health. You spend roughly a third of your life on it, and how well you sleep affects everything from your mood to your immune system. Yet most people give very little thought to mattress care until something goes wrong.

With the right maintenance habits, a good mattress that might otherwise wear out in seven years can comfortably serve you for ten years or more. The steps are straightforward, and most take only a few minutes. Here is everything you need to know to get the most out of your mattress, whether it is a brand-new purchase from our Best Beds mattress range or one you have had for a few years.

Use a Mattress Protector From Day One

This is the single most effective thing you can do to extend the life of your mattress. A good waterproof mattress protector acts as a barrier against spills, perspiration, dust mites, and allergens. Without one, body oils and moisture work their way into the foam or springs over time, breaking down the materials and creating conditions where mould and bacteria can develop.

Look for a protector that is breathable as well as waterproof. Cheaper vinyl-backed options can trap heat and make sleep uncomfortable, which defeats the purpose. Wash your mattress protector every two to four weeks along with your bedding, and replace it if it shows signs of cracking or no longer repels moisture effectively.

Think of it this way: a mattress protector costs a fraction of what a replacement mattress costs, and it keeps your warranty intact. Many mattress warranties are voided if there is staining, because staining is evidence that liquid has reached the core materials.

Rotate and Flip on a Regular Schedule

Even the best mattress will develop body impressions over time if you sleep in exactly the same spot night after night. Rotating and, where applicable, flipping your mattress distributes wear more evenly and prevents premature sagging in high-pressure areas like shoulders and hips.

Rotating Your Mattress

Most modern mattresses, including many in the Best Beds range, are designed to be rotated 180 degrees end to end. This means the end that was at your head is now at your feet. Do this every three months during the first year, and every six months after that. Mark it in your calendar so it does not slip your mind.

Flipping Your Mattress

Not all mattresses are double-sided, so check with your retailer before flipping. Traditional innerspring and pocket spring mattresses are generally safe to flip. Memory foam and pillow-top mattresses typically are not, as they have a specific top layer. If you are unsure about your Best Beds mattress, give us a call at 09-267 3266 and we can advise you.

Air Your Mattress Regularly

Moisture is a mattress's worst enemy. Every night, your body releases perspiration and heat into the mattress. In New Zealand's variable climate, especially in Auckland where humidity can be high, this moisture can accumulate and create conditions that degrade foam, encourage mould growth, and produce odours.

The remedy is simple: strip your bed completely and let the mattress breathe. Do this for at least two to three hours on a dry day, ideally once a month. Open windows to allow airflow through the room. If you can position the mattress near a window with indirect sunlight, even better, as UV light has natural antibacterial properties.

When you first bring a new mattress home, allow it to air for a full 24 hours before putting sheets on it. New mattresses can have a slight off-gassing smell from the manufacturing process, and airing resolves this quickly.

Spot Cleaning: How to Handle Spills and Stains

Accidents happen. When they do, acting quickly makes all the difference between a minor inconvenience and a permanent stain.

Dealing With Fresh Spills

The moment a spill occurs, blot it immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub or scrub, as this drives the liquid deeper into the material. Work from the outside of the spill inward to prevent spreading.

Once you have absorbed as much of the liquid as possible, lightly dampen a clean cloth with cold water and continue blotting. Avoid soaking the mattress. The goal is to dilute and lift the substance, not to saturate the foam or fabric.

Removing Common Stains

For most organic stains including blood, sweat, and urine, a paste of bicarbonate of soda and cold water works well. Apply the paste, leave it for 30 minutes, then blot clean and allow to air dry completely before remaking the bed. Enzyme-based cleaners available from supermarkets are also effective and safe for most mattress fabrics.

Avoid using bleach, strong chemical solvents, or excessive water. These can damage foam layers, weaken the fabric, and create moisture problems deep inside the mattress that are very difficult to resolve without professional help.

Eliminating Odours

Sprinkle dry bicarbonate of soda generously over the mattress surface, leave it for several hours or overnight, then vacuum it off with an upholstery attachment. Bicarb is excellent at neutralising odours without introducing moisture or chemicals.

Vacuum Your Mattress Periodically

Even with a protector, dust and skin cells accumulate on the mattress surface over time. These provide a food source for dust mites, which are a common trigger for allergies and asthma. Using a vacuum with an upholstery attachment, go over the entire mattress surface every one to two months. Pay particular attention to the seams and edges where debris collects.

If anyone in your household suffers from allergies, more frequent vacuuming, combined with an allergen-proof mattress protector and hypoallergenic pillows, can make a significant difference to sleep quality and overall wellbeing.

Ensure Proper Bed Base Support

A mattress is only as good as the base it sits on. An unsupportive or damaged base will cause even a high-quality mattress to sag prematurely and may void your warranty.

If you have a slatted bed frame, check that the slats are spaced no more than 6cm to 8cm apart. Wider gaps allow the mattress to sink between slats, creating uneven support and accelerating wear. Slats should also be firm, not bowing or cracked. Our NZ-made bed frames are built to provide the correct support for the mattresses we sell, so they are worth considering if your current base is showing its age.

For ensemble bases, check periodically that the springs or fabric are still in good condition. An ensemble that has lost its tension provides poor support regardless of how good the mattress is.

Be Mindful of Weight Distribution

Jumping on the bed, sitting repeatedly on the edge in the same spot, or storing heavy items on top of the mattress all accelerate wear. The springs and foam layers are designed to support body weight during sleep, not the concentrated impact of jumping or the constant pressure of sitting on the edge.

If you tend to sit on the same side of the bed to put on shoes or read before sleeping, try to vary your position. Over time, even this habitual edge-sitting can cause that section of the mattress to lose its shape more quickly than the rest.

When to Call in Professional Cleaning

For deep stains, persistent odours, or as part of a thorough annual clean, professional mattress cleaning services are available throughout Auckland. Steam cleaning is particularly effective at sanitising a mattress without leaving it overly wet. A professional clean every one to two years is a worthwhile investment, especially for families with young children or pets.

Before booking a cleaning service, check whether steam cleaning is appropriate for your specific mattress type. Most innerspring and pocket spring mattresses handle it well. Some memory foam products are more sensitive to heat and moisture, so always check the manufacturer guidelines first.

Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Mattress

Even with excellent care, every mattress has a natural lifespan. Knowing when to replace yours saves you months of poor sleep. Watch for these indicators:

  • Visible sagging or body impressions deeper than 2 to 3 centimetres
  • Waking up with stiffness, back pain, or neck pain that eases during the day
  • Sleeping better at hotels or on a guest bed than in your own bed
  • Increased allergy or asthma symptoms that worsen at night
  • Noisy springs or a squeaking base that disrupts sleep
  • The mattress is more than 8 to 10 years old

If you recognise several of these signs, it is likely time for a replacement rather than a repair. At Best Beds & Furniture, we have a wide range of mattresses to suit every sleeper type and budget, from firm support for back sleepers to plush pillow-top options for those who prefer a softer feel. How Proper Mattress Care Extends Lifespan From 7 to 10+ Years

To bring it all together: the average mattress, when neglected, lasts around seven years before it noticeably affects sleep quality. A mattress that is rotated regularly, protected from moisture, aired, and kept on a solid base can comfortably last ten to twelve years. That is a significant difference, not just in sleep quality across those years, but in the money you save by delaying replacement.

The good news is that none of the steps above require significant time or effort. A 30-minute rotation four times a year, a monthly airing session, a protective cover laundered with your sheets, and prompt attention to any spills are really all it takes. The habits are simple. The results, measured in years of better sleep, are substantial.

At Best Beds & Furniture, all our mattresses are made in New Zealand using high-density foam, pocket springs, and premium materials chosen for their durability. Buying New Zealand-made means you are also getting a mattress built for our climate, rather than one designed for conditions on the other side of the world.
