Storage Beds & Box Beds NZ: Maximise Your Bedroom Space

Running out of storage in your bedroom? A box bed NZ or storage bed solves one of the biggest challenges in modern homes — where to put everything. Here's why Kiwis are switching to beds with built-in storage and how to choose the right one.

What Is a Box Bed?

A box bed (also called a storage bed or ottoman bed) is a bed base with built-in storage compartments. Instead of wasting the space under your bed, a box bed turns it into usable drawers, shelves, or a lift-up compartment that can hold bedding, clothing, shoes, and seasonal items.

Types of Storage Beds

Drawer Box Beds

The most popular option. Two or four drawers are built into the sides of the bed base, operating on smooth runners for easy access. Our NZ-made drawer bases feature solid timber drawer boxes — not flimsy chipboard — for years of reliable use.

Lift-Up Ottoman Beds

The entire mattress platform lifts on gas struts to reveal a large storage cavity underneath. Ottoman beds offer more total storage than drawer bases and are ideal for bulky items like spare duvets, pillows, and suitcases.

End-Drawer Beds

Drawers at the foot of the bed are useful when side access is limited — for example, if your bed sits between two walls or beside built-in wardrobes.

Combination Storage Beds

Some designs combine side drawers with open shelving or headboard storage. These work well in studio apartments or teen bedrooms where furniture pieces need to multitask.

Who Should Buy a Box Bed?

  • Small apartment dwellers — Replace a chest of drawers with under-bed storage
  • Growing families — Kids accumulate toys and clothing fast; drawer beds keep rooms tidy
  • Guest bedrooms — Store spare bedding inside the bed itself
  • Renters — Maximise storage without adding furniture you'll need to move later
  • Downsizers — Moving to a smaller home? A storage bed compensates for lost wardrobe space

What to Consider Before Buying

  1. Drawer direction — Which side of the bed has clearance for drawers to open? Measure your room layout first.
  2. Weight capacity — Our drawer bases are built with reinforced NZ Pine frames to handle a full load without sagging.
  3. Mattress height — Box beds sit slightly higher than standard bases. If you prefer a lower bed, ask about our low-profile storage options.
  4. Assembly — Our box beds are delivered assembled or semi-assembled for easy setup.
